IMPORTANT
Parents, please keep your kids home from school if they are not feeling well. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that individuals stay home “until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating) without the use of fever-reducing medicine.” http://www.cdc.gov/flu/school/guidance.htm
Generally, your child may return to school when he/she is free of signs of illness. However, there may be times when it is necessary for your child to see your source of medical care before returning to school. Please call your school nurse if you have any questions regarding a specific condition.
Handwashing is the best way to help prevent the spread of germs. Please have a discussion with your kids and emphasize the importance of handwashing during the school day.
MEDICATION POLICY
It is likely that during the school year, your child will have a medication prescribed for the treatment of a health issue. The general policy we recommend is that children receive medication at home whenever possible. In the event that your child needs to receive medication at school, please note the following key points:
- All medication, including over the counter medication require a Physician’s written authorization (Form 525-13). You may follow the link or the form may be picked up in the Health Room.
- Prescription medication must be provided in a container with the Pharmacist’s label attached, the name of the child and the dosage printed on the label. The time to be given must match the physician’s order.
- For the safety of your student, as well as other students at school, all controlled substance medication must be delivered to the health room by a parent, guardian or designated adult.
- Students may “self carry” emergency medications such as Epi-Pens and inhalers with a Physicians order and approval by the School Community Health Nurse. The written order will be kept on file in the Health Room.
- Under NO circumstances, may students self carry or self administer other medication in the school setting (prescription or over the counter) unless the above written orders are in the health room.
- Under no circumstances will the school administer medication or allow children to take medication that does not follow the aforementioned rules.
As always please feel free to contact the health room with any questions or concerns.
